ZPEN guide
How to Use Your ZPEN
Please read these instructions carefully before first use. Most steps include a short video.
Improper use can damage the mechanism and is not covered by the warranty.
Step 1
Inserting the Refill
- Remove the front cap.
- Unscrew the tip.
- Insert the refill.
- Screw the tip back on.
Your ZPEN is now ready to write.
Step 2
Preparing Your Strip
ZPAPER is made from a special material that works with both handwriting and printing.
Writing by hand
You can write on the strip with a pen, pencil or other writing tools. Fill the space however you like, as long as you stay inside the strip and between the two red lines that mark the start and the end.
Editing digitally
ZPAPER works with both laser and inkjet printers. To edit the strip digitally, you need Microsoft Word. It's free on mobile.
First, download the template. Then follow the instructions below, depending on whether you're on a computer or a phone.
- Open the downloaded template in Microsoft Word.
- Triple-click on the red text to start typing.
- Font size and spacing are already set to the optimal size, but you can adjust them to your preference. You can use any color.
- You can also add pictures, shapes and drawings.
- When pasting text from somewhere else, click the paste icon that appears next to the text and choose Keep Text Only, so it keeps the preset formatting.
- When you're done, print it.
- Install the free Microsoft Word app.
- Open the downloaded template from Files / Documents. It will open in Word.
- Tap the pen icon in the top right, then the phone icon in the top right.
- A message appears at the bottom: “This document contains ink…”. Tap Print Layout.
- Tap the text once, then double-tap to start editing.
- When pasting text from somewhere else, tap the clipboard icon that appears next to the text (bottom right) and choose Keep Text Only.
- When you're done, tap the three dots (⋯) in the top right and select Print.
Step 3
Printing on ZPAPER
- Place the ZPAPER sheet straight and aligned in the printer.
- Print your strip.
- Inkjet printers only: wait 20 seconds for the ink to dry.
Your strip is now ready to insert.
Step 4
Inserting the Strip & Using the Pen
Only use the original ZPAPER. Other types of paper can jam and damage the mechanism. Damage caused by other paper is not covered by the warranty.
Removing, attaching and winding the strip are all shown step by step in the video. Watch it before inserting your first strip.
Removing the strip from the sheet
- Fold all edges around the strip to loosen it from the sheet.
- Carefully peel the strip out, releasing one side at a time so it doesn't tear.
Attaching the strip
- Peel the adhesive on the back of one end of the strip.
- Stick it as straight as possible onto the bottom roller inside the pen.
- Press the paper down with your finger and slowly rotate the ring until the whole adhesive part is attached and you reach the red line.
- Repeat on the other end with the top roller, by rotating the other ring.
Which end goes first
- Right-handed: stick the top of the text to the bottom roller first.
- Left-handed (as shown in the video): stick the bottom of the text to the bottom roller first.
Make sure both ends are firmly attached so the strip doesn't come loose later.
Winding the strip
- Turn both rings in opposite directions until the strip is tight and straight.
- Keep holding both rings the whole time, and don't overtighten.
- While still holding both rings, put the cover back on.
- Only then let go of the rings.
Your ZPEN is ready to use.
Reading your notes
- Rotate both rings together in the same direction to scroll the strip.
- You can scroll to the end, which is marked by the red line.
- Stop when you reach the end of the strip. Turning further can detach the paper.
Step 5
Removing the Strip
- Remove the cap.
- Slowly unwind the paper from both rollers until you reach the adhesive.
- Press on the end, then gently remove the adhesive by rotating and pulling down.
Don't force it. Pulling too hard can damage the pen, and this is not covered by the warranty.
Note: ZPEN is not intended for use during exams or tests. Cheating is not allowed. Always follow the rules of your school or institution.
